Thanks to Carlos Corbacho. e/emacs*.tgz: Updated to 22.1, use ctags stuff from vim, removed old patches. Bug 323. Thanks to Carlos Corbacho. +--------------------------+ Fri Oct 5 01:04:37 BST 2007 These updates mark the completion of the version bumps and the start of the mass-rebuilds that are pending before 12.0. It's pretty much just a large number of rebuilds with no series changes then making the ISOs, then an RC. The preceding sentence is subject to change if I discover that everything's horribly broken :p. A small warning that shouldn't really affect anyone: a lot of the packaged I've just labelled as "rebuilt" have had binaries that were owned by root:bin change to root:root ownership; however, this is the tertiary reason for rebuilding all this stuff. The secondary reason is to check it all still builds; I like everything on Slamd64 to be buildable on Slamd64 (this is why Slamd64 12's slackware/c/ packages are built with gcc -m32, instead of just copying the binaries from Slackware). The primary reason is that there are now 3 unofficial x86_64 Slackware ports that I am aware of. I'm rebuilding every package that doesn't have an "_slamd64" in the $ARCH field of the package name. Just incase you've missed it on the website, here's the reasoning again: - Adding "_$DISTRO" to $ARCH helps you as a user know exactly what distribution a package is meant for, not just a 1/3 chance - It helps people trying to support you identify where packages came from As an added clarification I've had a few questions about: Yes, I would like 3rd-party packages for Slamd64 to have "_slamd64" in the $ARCH field. The _slamd64 merely states the distribution it's aimed for. Adding a tag to $BUILD is my prefered way to indicate unofficial packages, and this seems to be the consensus in the community; for example: - An official package for "foo" might be called: foo-1.0-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz - An unofficial package I made for "foo" might be called: foo-1.0-x86_64_slamd64-1fpe.tgz Again, this is so that users of your packages make sure they are installing the right packages for their distribution. pasture/: Removed. extra/bash-completion/bash-completion-20060301-noarch_slamd64-2.tgz: Repackaged with _slamd64 tag. extra/keychain/keychain-2.6.8-noarch_slamd64-1.tgz: Updated. extra/unifdef/unifdef-1.0+20030701-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt. testing/packages/gutenprint-5.0.0-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt against new cups and gimp. a/acl-2.2.39_1-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt. a/acpid-1.0.4-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt. a/attr-2.4.32_1-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt. a/bash-3.1.017-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt. a/cpio-2.5-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt. a/devs-2.3.1-noarch_slamd64-25.tgz: Rebuilt. a/elvis-2.2_0-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt. a/floppy-5.4-x86_64_slamd64-3.tgz: Rebuilt. a/gawk-3.1.5-x86_64_slamd64-4.tgz: Rebuilt. a/genpower-1.0.5-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Added missing /var patch. a/gpm-1.20.1-x86_64_slamd64-3.tgz: Rebuilt, patched to build if /usr/include/linux is sanitised headers (recommended, as provided by slamd64's kernel-headers package). a/grep-2.5-x86_64_slamd64-4.tgz: Rebuilt. a/infozip-5.52-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt. a/jfsutils-1.1.11-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt. a/reiserfsprogs-3.6.19-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt. a/sharutils-4.6.3-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt. a/smartmontools-5.36-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt. a/tar-1.16.1-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Updated. a/tcsh-6.15.00-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Updated. a/usbutils-0.72-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt. a/xfsprogs-2.8.16_1-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Updated. ap/mc-4.6.1_20070309-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Updated. d/m4-1.4.9-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Updated. d/mercurial-0.9.4-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Updated. d/pmake-1.111-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Updated. This is useful even if you don't actually install from PXE/USB. In particular, I've used the faster form of syslinux for the USB image, which reportedly doesn't work on some older systems. I'm guessing that nothing that can run slamd64 counts as an 'older system' :-p Big thanks to Eric Hameleers for answering my questions about this. One slight change with the installers, compared to Slackware: I'm using usb-and-pxe-installers/initrd.img for isolinux/initrd.img - this means that when booting a CD/DVD, if you need PCMCIA/network support, it's there, you don't need to use pcmcia.dsk or network.dsk (which I've removed). I have a new GPG key, 0xAB1B750. It's signed by my old key, and is used for this batch of updates, and all future updates (well, until I next change my key :-p). extra/amsn/*: Removed. No-one complained I wasn't keeping it up to date. extra/kiptablesgenerator/*: Removed. Extra notes: - Take care to merge the .new files in the 'etc', 'sysvinit-scripts' and 'network-scripts' packages. - KDE now requires HAL (which is nifty), and stores configuration in /etc/kde - XFCE also requires HAL - If you're using KDE/XFCE/something else using hal, please comment out lines for any removable media in /etc/fstab (cdrom, floppy, usb drives, etc), and add the users you who you wish to have access to these devices into the 'plugdev' group. - I'm aware that some maketag/maketag.ez/tagfiles are incorrect. This is something I'm working on fixing; in most cases this is due to me recently resyncing them with Slackware, and some scripts of mine tell me what parts of them are incorrect, in other words, where Slamd64 needs to catch up with Slackware, so these 'incorrect' files are actually useful. They will be correct before the next release :) I'm also aware that madwifi and possibly a few other drivers haven't been rebuilt against the new kernels. This will happen shortly. I'd like to thank: - Carlos Corbacho (as always ;) for patches and help - Matt Hayes for general help - Rob Workman for help and advice - "OneForAll" for multilib help - The Fedora project for patches - The Cross-LFS and CBLFS projects for patches and help - Everyone that's submitted a bug report, especially if the bug number is mentioned here. - Patrick Volkerding, as always, because I couldn't do this if Slackware didn't exist in the first place. extra/beryl/Pyrex-0.9.5.1a-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt with libdir fixes. extra/jdk/jdk-6u1-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Updated to Java 6u1 extra/k3b/*: Removed - k3b now in kde/ extra/php5/*: Removed - php5 now in n/ pasture/sysvinit/*: Removed. pasture/udev/*: Removed. testing/packages/hplip-1.6.9-x86_64-1.tgz: Removed - now in ap/ a/cxxlibs-6.0.3-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Rebuilt libstdc++.so.5 - build script now in source/a/cxxlibs a/devmapper-1.01.03-x86_64-3.tgz: Removed. I'd also like to point out that when something is marked as "Removed" in the ChangeLog, and there's a replacement, it's a good idea to remove the old package before installing the new ones; for example, if after installing the new glibc32 packages you get glibc issues with 32-bit binaries, this probably means that you've not uninstalled the old 32* packages (which I'm currently working on doing in a better way). I'm also aware that the maketag and tagfiles for c/ don't reflect these changes yet. Anyway, here's how to do these updates: 1) Ignore the glibc and sysvinit packages, they're just changelog corrections, not actually new packages 2) Remove all 32-bit packages 3) Do all the non-32 bit upgrades 4) Check for any remaining packages with /usr/lib/pkgconfig, and upgrade/remove them. To get a list: grep usr/lib/pkgconfig /var/log/packages/* | cut -f 1 -d : | sort | uniq If you find one that's still in slamd64-current, please file a bug at http://bugs.slamd64.com 5) Remove the /usr/lib64/pkgconfig -> /usr/lib/pkgconfig symlink, if it exists 6) mv /usr/lib/pkgconfig /usr/lib64/pkgconfig 7) Install the 32-bit packages :) a/bzip2-1.0.4-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Upgraded to 1.0.4. a/e2fsprogs-1.39-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Upgraded to 1.39, moved .pc files to /usr/lib64/pkgconfig a/glibc-zoneinfo-2.5-noarch_slamd64-1.tgz: Added (incorrect package name in previous ChangeLog entry; thanks to Marin Martov) a/sysvinit-2.86-x86_64_slamd64-7.tgz: Added (incorrect package name in previous ChangeLog entry; thanks to Marin Martov) ap/alsa-utils-1.0.14rc2-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Upgraded to 1.0.14rc2 ap/linuxdoc-tools-0.9.21-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Moved .pc files to /usr/lib64/pkgconfig ap/mysql-5.0.37-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Updated to 5.0.37 c/alsa-lib32-1.0.14rc2-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Added. c/aaa_elflibs32-1.0-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Added. c/devel32-1.0-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Added. c/expat32-2.0.0-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Added. c/linux32-1.0-x86_64_slamd64-4.tgz: Moved from / to /usr, added manpage and linux64 symlink. c/mesa32-6.5.2-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Added. c/qt32-3.3.8-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Added. c/xlibs32-7.1-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Added. d/gdb-6.6-x86_64_slamd64-1.tgz: Upgraded to 6.6; this actually works with the new toolchain and glibc :p Thanks to Yair K. http://bugs.slamd64.com/show_bug.cgi?id=234 d/ruby-1.8.5_p12-x86_64_slamd64-2.tgz: Fixed ruby library paths. Thanks to Matt Hayes. http://bugs.slamd64.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223 +--------------------------+ Sat Mar 24 04:04:50 GMT 2007 This is gcc 4.1.2, glibc 2.5, modular XOrg, and new kernels. There'll be more of this new stuff coming soon. Huge thanks to Oneforall for help with the new toolchain. There's also general updates and rebuilds, such as KDE 3.5.6. Given the amount of updates here, there's likely to be a fair few new bugs, so I'd like to remind everyone that bugs are supposed to be reported (after searching to check it's not already reported - please add a comment to the existing report if it has, saying that it affects you too) on http://bugs.slamd64.com, not emailed directly to me. Bugzilla automatically mails me, but also provides me a nice handy online todo list, and makes problems more easily visible for the various other people who help Slamd64 to see and fix. Also, for anyone parsing this Changelog with some automated tool (including my RSS feed, whoops... I'll update that soon) SURPRISE! Now in the same format as Slackware :) This is primarily so that I can automatically check if I've changed something but not added it to the changelog (implementation pending :p). A couple of pointers: 1. All new packages will have "x86_64_slamd64" in the name; this is to distinguish between Slamd64 packages and packages for other 64-bit distributions. 2. glibc is no longer built as x86_64-slackware-linux; it's built as x86_64-slamd64-linux 3. /etc/slackware-version no longer exists, it's now /etc/slamd64-version. This and the above change are to reduce use of Patrick Volkerding's trademark; on a similar note, the "slackware/" directory will shortly be renamed "slamd64/". 4. If you use the nvidia binary drivers, after these updates, you'll need to add --x-module-path=/usr/lib64/xorg/modules --x-library-path=/usr/lib64 to the end of your command line when installing them. This is because the NVidia installer doesn't actually use `X -showDefaultModulePath` to work out where to put them, despite the help text indicating that it does. 5. If after you install X, if you get an error saying "could not find default font: 'fixed'" or similar, run pkgtool, select "Setup", tick "05.fontconfig" and "06.mkfontdir", then select OK. 6. If you upgrade any of glibc, gcc, X, or the kernel, upgrade all of them, otherwise you'll have some "interesting" problems. 7. If you use a custom kernel, recompile it (after running "make clean") after installing the gcc updates; otherwise you can't compile any out-of-kernel drivers, such as the nvidia drivers. 8. gcc now has -m32 support again. The gcc32* and glibc32* packages from c/ are required for this. 9. The 32-bit compatability libraries are going to be changing quite a lot. if you need this feature, don't update yet, as it's currently part-way through the change. Most of these removed packages will be re-added shortly. 10. gcc32* require the gcc, the relevant gcc-$language, and glibc32 packages installed. 11. Both kernels (huge and generic) are SMP. 12. Backup your mail, bookmarks, kwallet passwords etc, and rm -rf ~/.kde and ~/.kderc ; lots of stuff is likely to break with the move from /opt/kde to /usr 13. I've added beryl to extra/ - as well as the beryl* packages, you need Pyrex (for beryl-settings) and at least one of Aquamarine/Emerald. See http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install_Beryl_on_Slackware#Configuration for configuration information. 14. I lied.
